Please have a look at this new report on breast cancer amongst L/bi women!

MYTH: If you’re in a relationship with another woman you can rely on your partner to spot any unusual lumps in your breasts

FACT: It’s important for every woman to take control of her own wellbeing and regularly check her own breasts for abnormalities.

Breast Cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer for women: 1 in 12 women will develop breast cancer. But if it is caught early there are excellent recovery chances.

The best way to detect breast cancer early is to be aware of what is normal for your breasts.
Knowing how your breasts look and feel at different times will enable you to know what is normal and to recognise any unusual changes. The older we get the more important this becomes.

Breast awareness is about women knowing about their own bodies. Knowing how your breasts look and feel at different times will enable you to know what is normal and to recognise any unusual changes. The older we get the more important this gets.

What should a breast look and feel like?

What is normal for one woman may not be for another. Breasts will also look and feel different over time depending on age (breasts get ‘lumpier’ as we get older) and time of the month. Similarly one breast is always slightly smaller than the other or has a slightly different shape. Nipples can also change size, texture and color.

What about routine self examination?

Women are encouraged to check their breasts for what is normal for them to identify any abnormalities. Texture and appearance is relevant. However, routine self examination to a set technique is not recommended – there particular way to check. It’s simply about knowing how your breasts feel at different times during the month so that you can identify any changes. If you identify a change, it is recommended that you consult your GP.
As we get older (50+) we also need to attend routine breast screenings or mammograms. These are x-ray examinations that help to find smaller changes in our breasts.
