School / College / University

Some schools, colleges or universities have support groups for LGBT students. Even if there isn't an official group, there is likely to be a member of staff who looks after students' welfare, or a counsellor. They'll know of local support groups, and you can speak to them confidentially.

Work

Some large companies have support networks for LGBT employees. Unions sometimes have support services for LGBT staff too. If you're worried about coming out at work, remember that since 2003 it's been illegal to discriminate against someone at work because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation.

Bars, Clubs

Most large towns and cities have gay bars (see scene guide). In the North East, Newcastle has the biggest gay scene, which is centred around the Centre for Life near the train station. If you're over 18 and enjoy going to bars and clubs the scene can be good fun, but it's not for everyone, and there are plenty of other options.

LGBT support / Social groups

There are several groups in the North East that provide regular events for women. Some are based around activities, such as ‘Dyke Hikes’ who go on walks. Our directory has full details of local groups.

Other leisure activities

You don't have to do specifically LGBT things to meet L/Bi women. L/Bi women play sports, go to gigs, join book clubs, do voluntary work - everything, in fact, that straight people do. When you join a new club or group don't assume that everyone is straight - after all, you're there, and you're not!
