_0012_Layer1Having sex for the first time, even just with someone new, should be a great experience. One way to ensure that it is not a great experience is to do it when you aren’t ready. Here is a checklist of points to consider if you are thinking about having sex for the first time:

Do you understand the risks? If you understand the risks associated with having sex then you are more likely to take the necessary precautions needed to minimise those risks. The last thing you want is to walk away from your first experience of sex with an STI.

Do you understand consent? Sex is not compulsory, for anyone or with anyone. It is a choice and it is okay to change your mind and say ‘no’ at any point in the process. Consent means permission and if both people involved haven’t given their permission then sex shouldn’t happen.

Are you able to talk about sex & about your emotions with your partner? Sex is an emotional act as well as a physical act and it is important that you can talk about these things to get the experience you want.

Ultimately, you should trust your own feelings to tell you if you are ready for sex. You need to know that you are doing it for yourself and that you are not being forced to compromise your personal boundaries.
